The 15-year-old artist and author's new book, 'We Can, Portraits of Power', shows his brilliant portraits of people who have inspired, influenced, and encouraged him to be brave.
He discusses how he became a painter and with each profile explains the characteristics each person profiled possess that provided him with inspiration. Following in the footsteps of @gordoncjamesfineart , @jerrypinkneystudio @floyd.cooper.4 , and @brycollier, we hope to see Tyler Goron write and illustrate many more books sharing his artwork and stories with young readers. This day continues to raise awareness for individuals within the LGBTQ+ community, especially Black individuals, to champion the idea that homophobia lives in silence.
It celebrates a liberated spirit. The following books share both fiction and non-fiction share narratives of what it feels like and the experiences, for some in the LGBTQ+ community. So insightful and diverse. The gentleman on this panel's influence and insight are so important in understanding how to engage youth with reading. Professor Brain Wright's book 'The Brilliance of Black Boys', asserts cultural responsiveness helps teachers and librarians to engage and incorporate identity development practices to better instill agency and voice in young Black boys.
Taking theory to practice, country singer Jimmie Allen, authors a picture book entitled 'My Voice is a Trumpet', to help kids recognize their voices can change the world. What culturally responsive practices do you use in your schools and libraries to foster voice and agency? He was one of the best-known men of the 20th century—Muhammad Ali is the quintessential definition of a transformative leader. So many themes from his life can be transferred to curriculum, social justice, ethics, philosophy, civil rights, masculine identity, and humanitarianism.
The iconic Muhammad Ali will be featured in a new Kens Burn documentary. What an incredible life to incorporate and engage students with literacy. This site has curricular information about Ali to use in the classroom. Today's books feature protagonists who build resiliency and affirm identity. Both books illustrate young Black males in different mediums, encouraging viewers to see Black boys diverse representation in contrasting visual illustrations.
